Grandmaster Recorder’s unique approach to recording is based around two totally different sounding and isolated rooms: The Wood Room and The Cement Drum Room. A third space is Grandmaster Recorders' secret weapon secret weapon, the 112’ x 50’ x 20’ Warehouse with stage. In fact, there are many non-traditional spaces to record at Grandmaster Recorders other than the main rooms. This is in part to all walls being at specially calculated angles to maximize the recording potential.

The rooms also have windows so bands can easily maintain eye contact while tracking live. It is the best of both worlds: live feel and total sonic isolation.

The centerpiece of the control room is the 1973 Class A Neve 8028.  The console features 1084 and 1073 modules and four built in Neve 2254 compressors.  Geoff Tanner, an original Neve designer from 1970s maintains the console so it has maximum punch at all times.

The Grandmaster control room also features the best of analog and digital processing.  From Pro Tools HD3 recording to the Studer A827 analog tape recorder, many options are possible.  When you pair these rooms with Grandmaster’s compliment of vintage outboard gear, just about any vintage and modern sound is at your disposal

Grandmaster Recorders’ Wood Room space is built from Black Walnut.  This provides a signature sound that has been heard on hundreds of records.  This room is known for its relatively dry, focused, and punchy sound.  Sounds come alive in this room, rich with detail and low-end punch.  All instruments excel in this room, from guitars, vocals, and bass to strings, percussion, and keyboards.  Don Davis was asked to design a special drum riser and diffuser in this room that accentuates a drier drum sound.  This has been used to great effect over the years with many jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock recordings.

You will be amazed at the isolation you can get in The Wood Room.  Full bands have tracked in this room without any extra baffling and yet instrument bleed is at a minimum.  That is what this room was designed to do.

Approx 35’ x 35’ x 14 ft.

Grandmaster Recorders has always been recognized for its ability to record signature drum sounds.  The Cement Drum Room is more open and ambient than The Wood Room, but also has the ability to be controlled quite easily.  As a result, you can have nice dry and tight close sounds, with room sounds that sound easily twice as big as the room actually is.

Due to the unique Bass Reflex and Diffusion system built by Don Davis, this room has an incredibly balanced sound.  Kick and snare sounds are even and cymbals, while being heard just fine, are not overpowering.

The room also features Grandmaster’s Yamaha Custom Grand Piano.  Custom made for the late, great Billy Preston, this piano is a beloved piece of equipment.  This piano is equally capable for use in beautiful solo pieces and blazing rock songs, just like Billy.

Approx 112’ x 50’ x 20 ft.

The Warehouse space is Grandmaster Recorders' hidden jem. This “funky” space has lent its signature sound to many recordings. If you want to hear what drums sound like in here, just take a listen to Foo Fighters' “My Hero.” Yes, drums sound great back here, but many people have recorded everything from full band ensembles, to gang vocals, to making this room into the largest reverb chamber you have ever seen.

» Lobby and Lounge

At Grandmaster Recorders, the Lobby and Lounge provide rooms for client to relax, eat, and any other business that you might have to take care of. The lounge features a large TV with Satellite, DVD, and VCR. We also have leather couches in the main area and the upper loft, where the dartboard and foosball are located. There is also a kitchenette to store food and supplies. The lounge also has two private bathrooms. One with a 1840s theme and one with French antiques, complete with the
infamous Red Bathtub.

The Lobby is located just outside the Control Room and is another spot where clients can relax while still being able to keep an ear on the goings on in the studio. There is an Apple Macintosh at the front desk for the clients to use, but Grandmaster also has complimentary wireless Internet available in every room in the studio.
